鋼結(jié)構(gòu)加層改造研究在我國很早就有了，比房屋加層改造起步還早。建筑結(jié)構(gòu)改造、加固以及鋼結(jié)構(gòu)工程的發(fā)展迅速，為了更好的完成舊建筑物的加層和改造工作。我國先后成立了許多房屋加層改造技術(shù)的學(xué)術(shù)團(tuán)體，使鋼材結(jié)構(gòu)加固改造這一團(tuán)體學(xué)術(shù)團(tuán)體內(nèi)學(xué)術(shù)氣氛濃郁，創(chuàng)造了經(jīng)驗(yàn)探討的交流環(huán)境，推動(dòng)這鋼結(jié)構(gòu)加層改造的發(fā)展。

鋼結(jié)構(gòu)加層改造也稱為外套框架加層結(jié)構(gòu)，在加層層數(shù)比較多或者是不太方便在原結(jié)構(gòu)上直接加層的建筑物時(shí)可以運(yùn)用鋼結(jié)構(gòu)加層改造。外套框架加層架構(gòu)分為分離式和整體式兩個(gè)大類，分離式結(jié)構(gòu)加層時(shí)可以和之前的舊房結(jié)構(gòu)完全脫開；整體式結(jié)構(gòu)加層則是在舊房結(jié)構(gòu)的基礎(chǔ)上進(jìn)行加層改造，連成整體。
